Thank you to our clients who used 2roofs Real Estate to purchase their home which has helped people like Asim find healthy and safe housing through the Bellingham Home Fund.

Asim first asked us for help in October of 2015.  He is an Egyptian-born naturalized U.S. Citizen, who had originally been a professional translator for State Department independent contractors.   While on a visit to his mother, he was caught up in the Arab Spring which made it very dangerous for him to identify as a U.S. Citizen and he was forced to burn his passport which made it very difficult for him to return. Shortly after he was repatriated by the U.S. Embassy in 2015, he suffered a heart attack, was no longer able to work, found himself homeless and eventually living on SSI.  He had no rental history because his employer had housed him in hotels for over 20 years as he worked.  He ended up staying at the Lighthouse Mission for nearly three years.

Opportunity Council’s Homeless Outreach Team (funded by the Bellingham Home Fund) facilitated a Section 8 rent assistance voucher for him from Bellingham Housing Authority, but his lack of rental history was a barrier.  Fortunately, Mercy Housing agreed to set aside eight units for homeless seniors in its downtown Bellingham Eleanor Apartments (funded by the Bellingham Home Fund), and Asim moved into one of them using his voucher.  He called us recently and left a message about how much he loves his apartment and how grateful he is to have it, now one year later.
