Experts say Washington State is decades behind the times when it comes to its treatment of some of its most vulnerable citizens – people with developmental disabilities. In Washington State, more people with these disabilities – conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome – are institutionalized than in most other states. That bucks a decades-long trend to stop the segregation of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Shawn is one young man who experienced this first hand. In 2015, he moved to Lynden, Washington as part of the Cascade Supported Living program, but before that, he was living in a state institution in the Seattle area. At the institution, Shawn’s whole life was run on schedules other people made for him, and he had little to no choice about any part of his life. Moving him to Lynden took a lot of time and effort, but it was worth it. Shawn now lives in his own home where he has Cascade Supported Living staff to support him in achieving his goals. Shawn is now an active community member who enjoys swimming and listening to music, and he has been working with the Cascade Connections’ Vocational Services to identify his marketable job skills. His next goal is to find paid employment in the near future.
